This is the journal of a German artilleryman fighting on the Russian Front during World War II.  This was a campaign that was both brutal and demoralising for his country.  Sometimes he would be behind his gun, sometimes marching ever Eastwards through the snowy wastes before then having to fight back in the opposite direction.  This book makes a fascinating personal history of one of the major campaigns of the war and gives a clear picture of the thoughts of an educated German who fought through it.
